First Saturday in May

I love the first Saturday in May, Kentucky Derby Day. For one thing, it's the only day of the year when people all across the country wish they lived in Kentucky -just before the race they play "My Old Kentucky Home" and it's breathtaking. And for another thing, there's always a story.
This year's winner was Mine That Bird, a 50-1 long shot who paid $103.20 on a $2 bet. And no, he wasn't my horse, but he has a story.
His trainer, on crutches after a motorcycle accident, drove him to Louisville from New Mexico in a pick-up with a trailer. His owners paid just $9500 for him. His jockey Calvin Borel won the Kentucky Oaks yesterday, winning a garland of lilies for that race and a garland of roses for the Derby today.
I always like the horses who start way back in the field, and Mine That Bird was no exception. He started out in the back, way in the back, and then started running along the rail, passing horse after horse. Like Sarah says, horses like that are motivational. (By the way, Sarah and Winnie were drinking Mint Julips.)
One thing about the Derby - it isn't kind to favorites. This year was no exception - the favorite finished second to last.
There's talk already about the Preakness, and I'll be watching, but there's nothing like the first Saturday in May.
