I don't have a plan about how it will all work, just trusting that it will come together like it should. I have to admit that I'm looking at all those bright colors and feeling just a little nervous, but I did want those brights, after all.

Nora after practice last night: "I love softball." She heard one of the girls say, "She's really a good hitter," and the coach waved the outfielders back when she came to bat. She was proud that one of the knees on her long shorts had a big grass stain and the other had a spot of blood from fielding adventures. I'm so delighted that this little academic-oriented girl has a team sport that she really enjoys.

After practice we walked to the concession stand for icy drinks, then picked up pizza and salad from Gramma's Pizza, which has really awesome cheese pizza. It's located right across the street from the road leading to the ball fields, great location for them.

Things to be grateful for today: waking up early to bird sounds, that my computer had security software added during the night, stumbling on to a new simple quilt pattern that I love. That I have all that mulch in my back yard. You can see her tutorial here. The little guy has his dad's old number.

I learned this morning that Aaron prefers games to practices. Practices are boring, it seems, and I imagine that there is the uniform factor as well.

Aaron said he didn't feel well this morning so we did our drill of pulling out of the car line (first) to the other side of the building and he walked around a little, saying this stomach really didn't feel good. Then we pulled back around the building to our new position in the car line, next to last, and the ailment seemed to go away. It would be awesome if all illness could be so easily cured.

It was a big morning, starting with the book fair at Nora's school. I think they need a couple of morning days because it is a very crowded event. Very cool to see kids picking out books and being excited about it.

Aaron's preschool starts at 9:15, and he loves to be first in the car line. The cars line up, and at 9:15 one of the teachers comes out, opens the car's back door, and the child hops out with lunch box and whatever else is needed that day. Very efficient, the child walks into the school, the parent drives away, and the next car pulls up. No tears, no hanging on. The kids and the parents know the drill.

Once Nora is dropped off, Aaron enjoys one last video game, in an interactive kind of way, down the road and in the car line. "Gran B, do you hear those monkeys?" "Do you wish you had zombies in your room?" "I never cleared that level before." His fingers move and his month moves.

Come to think of it, last week at the tee ball game, Steph commented that Aaron might be too social to play first base. I found a tutorial for making it here, although I did change the block arrangement. It's fun and quick to do, and uses scraps too. Now I'm at least caught up with the rest of my group as they work on this month's quilt.

It's a rainy afternoon and it feels good to be excused from yard work. I did go outside before church, and the rain, and moved several buckets of mulch from the big pile in the back yard. Last summer I had two trees cut down and the tree service ground up the stumps. My landscaper daughter told me that I had to wait a year to use that mulch, but I figure that ten months is probably close enough. Hmmm, if I move ten bucketsful every day, I wonder how long it will take to either mulch everything or run out of mulch. I'll let you know.

Remembrances

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; my uncle Darvin died on Friday at age 91, in the Riley Creek home he and aunt Evelyn loved. He was the family patriarch for many years, and we will miss him.

To me, his home was a place of riches, always. In the house on Elm Street, there was a grape arbor, a tv, a Monopoly game, a wonderful garden, a former chicken coop far enough back in the yard that it seemed like a different place. My cousin Gregg and I were playing there one summer day when Darvin called to us and we slunk into the house, certain that we were in some undetermined trouble. But what awaited us were root beer floats, my first, a sweet treat that tasted incredible. I remember a summer meal under the grape arbor, the picnic table, the shady spot. It fed my child's heart as well as my stomach.

For the former art teacher, Darvin's home was a place of art. I love the piece in his entryway that reads, "When the world wearies and ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden." And garden he did, far into his 80's. And create he did, always, but his art perfected looking as well as making. He photographed and collected pieces that looked like something else, that tickled his fancy.

He chose joy, loved a whole list of life happenings. Instead of a mumbled grace before meals, he loved to sing the Johnny Appleseed song. He loved to share meals - many times when I meet someone they will say, "I had dinner with your aunt and uncle at their house one evening." He loved stories, loved to tell them, loved to hear them. His ability and willingness to "talk Swiss" was amazing to me - in my home I would beg my parents to speak some Swiss words but they would decline.

Darvin taught art at what-was-then Bluffton College for many years, and I always marveled over the story of his carrying buckets of clay up three flights of stairs to what at that time was the art space. Amazing too was his spirit in choosing art as a career, growing up in a family and the post-depression time where the practical, not the artistic, was valued.

I love the pictures of Darvin with his new great-granddaughter Milena because he loved his family, all of them. Nieces and nephews included. We will all miss him.

(Thanks to Kristen for sharing the photo.) Circular Attachment. I have to admit that it's quite a tool! Since my first quilt I've done a little research and have learned two simple steps that give really good-looking results. First, use a tear-away stabilizer on the back. For lots of circles, it's easy to iron on a fusible tear-away that just stays throughout the piecing. And, use a table to support your work.

It just so happens that I don't have a table for my Diamond, only for my smaller machine, so I kept on the embroidery unit and stacked some books behind the machine. And, I mentally added a table to my list of wants. Along with a single hole needle plate. I always have a list!

I'm using a very light verigated thread for the free motion and wish I'd chosen a darker color, even if I couldn't find it in verigated. This is ok, though, in areas where I've travel stitched several times over a line of stitching it has a wispy look that I kind of like. My goal for today is to finish the background quilting, then move on to working in the yard. It's the season.

At Last This Quilt Is Finished

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It feels like I've been looking at this Trip Around the World forever. I know there was the "grandmother was sick as a dog" week and the trip to Asheville week and last week spent picking out the machine quilting, but still . . .

At least, in the end, I really like it, and there isn't a tuck anywhere, so the time spent ripping out was worth it.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; So beautiful. And, so typical, Aaron is flat-out happy and shows it, Nora, I'm sure, is flat-out happy as well, but a little reserved.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j7BFsq1SPT4/UXMJvMBIWBI/AAAAAAAANLQ/YSjnfTkaxRM/s1600/Behringer+Crawford+Museum.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; At the group on Monday, I was using my beloved Viking Emerald, which I like to take for events like that. It's light, and mechanical, so I don't have to take my "good" machines. But I used a generic walking foot that I had at home (the regular Viking walking feet don't fit on this machine) and obviously, in retrospect, it wasn't the right one. Not horrible, but it wasn't right either, and I want my quilts to look nice. One more seam.

New Bobbins

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The ninth inning continuation of Tuesday night's game lasted all of nine minutes, 2 walks, 2 singles, win for the Reds. The Reds won the second game 11 - 2. Remember when I said that if they don't hit one night they'll get lots of hits the next?

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Viking has had these watercolor bobbins for years but I never got any because I usually did my piecing with gray or cream or navy and didn't need many bobbins for that. I usually use prewound NEBS for the quilting. But recently I've been doing quite a few alterations and the threads need to match. So, more threads and new bobbins.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The game finally got started around 8:30, went 8 1/2 innings, and, can you believe it, got delayed again with the score 0 - 0 when it started pouring again. It was Homer Bailey's night, too, with ten strike-outs.

The game will start up again at 5:30 this afternoon, in advance of tonight's game. It seems that when the Reds can't score one night they do well the next, so maybe they can walk off in their half of the ninth. And here's the thing: I've heard that I can trade in last night's ticket for another one for tonight's game since they will be finishing last night's game. This morning. For the shower after church.

I can't remember ever seeing my mother actually quilt, she always knotted. Once or twice, as a young child, I can remember my grandmother's sisters and friends quilting at a frame in her dining room. And when they all went home, I can remember my grandmother checking to see whose stitches weren't neat.

One sister in particular, who "drove a tractor like a man," got bad press for her too-big quilting stitches. I was surprised to look at one of her quilts in later years and see that she could, in fact, quilt neatly when she wanted to.

Side story: a few years ago my sister and I were driving down the Pandora, Ohio, road past what had been my great-aunt's and uncle's farm. There was a sign saying "sweet corn for sale." We didn't really want any sweet corn, but we drove up the lane anyway to catch a glimpse of the house and barn. The owner had been a neighbor, and he told us, "You know, it was your great-aunt who was the farmer in that family."

I worked the past three days while most of my co-workers were at the International Quilt Show in Cincinnati. This was fine with me - I'd gone the past two years. I must have had quilt show envy, though, because I found myself placing a Superior Thread order a couple of nights ago, mostly for threads I haven't used before. One was for a thread that can be used for hair and can take curling iron heat to 400 degrees. Sounds like the perfect thing to use in my upcoming "My Favorite Thing" quilt. I got red, of course.

Nora and I

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; (What is it with kids, that new phrases tickle their fancy and they repeat them again and again?)

And the next thing I knew, Aaron had croup and then Grandmother was sick as a dog. And now Steph is sick as a dog. And surely it's just a matter of time until Nora has croup as well. And we're supposed to be leaving for Asheville in the morning.

I know that adults don't usually get croup so maybe Steph and I have unrelated viruses. And Nora is kind of out of the bad croup age, so she may escape and everyone will feel better and my blue car will be going down the highway tomorrow.

I dragged myself over to the dealership yesterday for an oil change but just felt too rough to pick things up inside and dust a little bit. The all-weather mats, thank goodness for them, are muddy because when it thaws a little there is still mud from the construction last fall. And there were crumbs all over the back seat, and I had to ask them to check out the back seat belts because after the recall work I could barely buckle Aaron's. I was afraid they might say, "Of course you can't buckle it, it's filled up with crumbs."

That didn't happen, though, and the dealership washes the car when it's in so at least it's lovely on the outside. And I've learned that it's kind of futile to clean out the inside BEFORE a car trip with kids. Maybe the dealership has seen worse, I don't know. Aren't Subaru's supposed to look a little rugged? Yesterday I didn't look closely enough at the directions and completely messed it up. Oh, well, I always tell my students that I make the mistakes so they won't have to. And, I can rescue the messed-up piece, it will look just fine, I just can't use it as a sample.

There was also a second mess-up that really worked ok. I didn't put on the embroidery foot, accidentally left on the free motion foot. But, I guess that a floating foot is a floating foot because it worked just fine. Tension was awesome. Nevertheless, I have on the embroidery foot this morning, I'm going to do everything right today.

I learned awhile ago that Aaron is sick this morning, fever and cough, and Mike will be dropping him off here on his way to work. Carrye and I were going to play with her Janome this afternoon, but we'll have to do that another day.

Aaron's Quilt

Finally, after a couple of days at work, several getting the kids to school, some early-morning church volunteering, and finishing some sewing jobs, I'm quilting in my pajamas this morning. I've been wanting to free motion this little dragonfly from my Craftsy Beyond Machine Quilting class.

He has a few little bobbles, for example the second-to-the-last circle isn't as small as it should be. One thing I'm learning, though, is that in free motion to just let it go, not try to rip out stithces unless something is REALLY awful, and in fact, from a little distance away, he looks fine. The little guy is 4" high from antenae tip to bottom, with micro-stippling all around.

And now for a kid story: Yesterday I picked up the kids after school and Nora was doing her homework in the car. For math addition and subtraction, she tends to count on her fingers. Aaron watched her, and when she got to some larger numbers he said, "Nora, do you want me to hold up my fingers so you'll have twenty fingers instead of ten?" Is that not the sweetest offer from a little guy who sometimes likes to pick on his sister?

He tends to remember the math facts instead of counting, but yesterday she gave him a problem he didn't know and all was quiet in the back seat and I knew he was counting too. Tonight Aaron is coming to spend the night while Nora and her mom go to a wedding shower. He gets so happy when he can be a pretend only child for a few hours.
